Peter Eisenman’s
installation at Castelvecchio grows out of the American architect’s
profound interest in the working processes of some of the greatest
twentieth-century architects – of particular importance is his
interpretation of Giuseppe Terragni’s work
– and his attention to sites that are rich with history, where
events from various periods are layered and intertwined. In this sense,
Castelvecchio represents the depository of memory par excellence;
at the same time, Carlo Scarpa’s intervention
made a defining contribution to the valorisation of the monumental
complex by offering new and stimulating ways of reinterpreting it.
Since the 1970s and ‘80s, the museum site – in particular
the garden where Eisenman’s project is located – has encouraged
a creative dialogue between works of contemporary art and the monument
itself. Among the memorable examples is the one-man exhibition of
work by Pietro Consagra in 1976-77, with sculptures
realized using stratifications of marble and stone, which were particularly
admired by Carlo Scarpa. This was followed by Strappo,
in which Piera Legnaghi lifted up an ample flap of
the lawn. The 1981 exhibition, Il luogo della forma, featured work
by nine artists selected by Gillo Dorfles and Licisco
Magagnato, installed in the courtyard and on the bridge of
Castelvecchio, whose interventions with large-scale environmental
sculptures in steel and wood set up a visual dialogue with the medieval
castle.
