Berliner Ensemble



Il Berliner Ensemble è la storica compagnia fondata da Bertolt Brecht nel 1949, al suo ritorno dall'esilio americano. All'inizio della sua avventura il teatro voluto da Brecht e da sua moglie, l'attrice Helene Weigel, non aveva una sede fissa e fu ospitato ai Kammerspiele del Deutsches Theater. Solo dal 1954 Brecht ebbe uno spazio tutto suo al Theater am Schiffbauerdamm, dove aveva già lavorato Max Reinhardt, e qui mise in scena Madre Coraggio e i suoi figli (regia di Brecht e di Engel, scene di Teo Otto, protagonista principale di questo dramma sugli orrori non ancora placati della guerra, la Weigel, sulla scena un dipinto di Picasso raffigurante la colomba della pace), i suoi testi e classici come Coriolano di Shakespeare, il tutto secondo i dettami di un teatro antillusionistico dove gli attori, con il cosiddetto `effetto di straniamento', inducono il pubblico a riflettere, a pensare. Alla morte di Brecht, nel 1956, la direzione del Berliner fu affidata a Helene Weigel, poi a Manfred Wekwerth e in seguito a Ruth Berghaus, non sempre con grandi risultati,
a volte giacendo sugli allori di un antico splendore anche per i frequenti veti incrociati degli eredi. Alla caduta del muro a dirigere il Berliner sono Peter Zadek, Peter Palitzsch, Fritz Marquardt, Matthias Langhoff e Heiner Müller. Da compagnia di stato il Berliner Ensemble diventa intanto compagnia privata, sovvenzionata dalla municipalità. Nel settembre 1999 Claus Peymann ne diventa direttore artistico. Oggi, come in passato, il BE è considerato uno dei punti di riferimento per la Germania, sia per il teatro contemporaneo che nell’affrontare il repertorio classico in chiave moderna. Oltre a Shakespeare, Brecht, Schiller, Lessing, Beckett e Ibsen, sono in repertorio opere di scrittori e drammaturghi di lingua tedesca: da Elfriede Jelinek a Botho Strauß, a Peter Handke.

Berliner Ensemble
The Berliner Ensemble is the historical company founded by Bertolt Brecht in 1949 after returning from his exile in America. At the beginning of its adventure the company created  by Brecht and his wife, the actress Helene Weigel, had no set residence and was housed in the Kammerspiele of the Deutsches Theater. Only in 1954  Brecht managed to have a space of his own in the Theater am Schiffbauerdamm, where Max Reinhartd had already worked, and here he staged Mother Courage and her Children (directed by Brecht and Engel; scenes by Teo Otto – a painting by Picasso of the dove of peace; Helene Weigel female lead of this drama about the still open wounds of the war ), his own work and classics such as Shakespeare’s Coriolanus, all by the standards and the norms of an anti-illusionist theatre where the actors use techniques that remind the spectator he must think and to reason, the so called “estrangement effect” or “distancing effect”. After Brecht’s death in 1956, the direction of the Berliner was inherited by Helene Weigel, then by Manfred Wekwerth  followed by Ruth Berghaus, not always with a top class outcome, sometimes resting on the laurels of  a past glory, not least due to frequent vetos of Brecht’s descendents. When the Wall fell the Berliner was under the guide of Peter Zadek, Peter Palitzsch, Fritz Marquardt, Matthias Langhoff and Meiner Mueller. In the meantime the state owned Berliner Ensemble turned into a private company, supported by the township. In September 1999 Claus Peymann became artistic director. Nowadays, as in the past, the BE is considered a benchmark in Germany, for both contemporary theatre and for modern rendition of the classic repertoire. Apart from Shakespeare, Brecht, Schiller, Lessing, Beckett and Ibsen, the company’s repertoire includes the work of German language authors and play-writers: from Elfriede Jelinek to Botho Strauss, to Peter Handke.
