It is a great honor for me to exhibit the works of my first 20 years of activity here in this beautiful museum of the Scavi Scaligeri.

Centro Internazionale di Fotografia

Cortile del Tribunale
from  October 25th to January 5th  2003
Opening time:
Tuesday to Sunday - 10 a.m. / 7 p.m.
Monday closed

The exhibition will show you the beginning of my portrait career, which started by photographing the great blues musicians of Chicago such as Sunnyland Slim, Jr. Wells and internationally known blues godfather John Lee Hooker.

In the late 80’s and early 90’s I began my portrait study of America’s real die-hard Harley-Davidson motorcycle riders. This project brought world attention to my work as major articles appeared in "The New Yorker Magazine" and "Stern Magazine" and a book was the end result of this study.

In 1990 my reputation as a portrait photographer grew. Great names such as Michael Jordan, Muhammad Ali and John Malkovich were added to the growing list of celebrities I photographed.

In the mid 1990’s my interest in photographing bullfighting started when the great matador Joselito invited me to travel with him throughout Spain as he danced flawlessly with each and every bull that entered the ring with him.
After bullfighting came boxing and then ballet. Traveling around the world to cover all these events became my passion.

In the late 1990’s my work had turned to the study of the nude body. Every single body is new discovery and offers me a different type of beauty, whether it becomes a landscape of some sort or a bird-like figure flying effortlessly through the air.

The love of distressing my pictures of nudes came from discovering old photographs which had been mishandled or not properly chemically fixed. I have been playing with altering my negatives to speed up this aging process with results I find pleasant and interesting.

My work in 2000 and 2001 brought me to Cuba, documenting the people of a country that lives in great poverty but with souls and hearts that are content, filled with love and content to give you what is theirs.

In 2001 the Cuban government invited me back to do portraits of 90 of their country’s past and present athletes. An honor for me as Fidel Castro banned the photographing of Cuba’s athletes back in 1959.

My career has been tremendously influenced by the works of Irving Penn. My life changed at the age of 17 when I discovered his work. At the age of 20, I began my apprenticeship with Chicago photographers. However, I have taught myself by studying the works of our great masters and an incredible passion to create memorable work for our photographers of tomorrow inspires me daily.

I thank all the people of Verona who have made it possible for me to share my work with them at the great museum of the Scavi Scaligeri.
