"I photograph ghosts. They are usually my ghosts, but sometimes they are someone else’s". Keith Carter

"Photography is a wonderful toy, a bitter medicine, a difficult yet universal word". Mauro Fiorese

The TWO SPIRITS exhibition, with over a hundred black and white images, is a collection of the best works of two of the most interesting names in contemporary Italian and international photography: Keith Carter and Mauro Fiorese. Although these two artists come from completely different backgrounds, they share a common great perceptiveness and deep interest in subjects steeped in mystery and spirituality. Such subjects, which both artists have for years strived to touch and include in their art, have led them to the most far flung corners of the world.

|
In Keith Carter’s case, his passion for seeing things from a new, extraordinary point of view started as he was rummaging around Texas, his home state, and later, also around the rest of the US and Europe. The international recognition he subsequently acquired as an author and lecturer gave him the opportunity to investigate and introduce us to new, magical things through what he calls his visual poetry and his – always eagerly anticipated – books. | |
|
In the early ‘90s a relationship of profound friendship and mutual esteem sprang up between Carter and Fiorese. After an initial sporadic period of collaboration, in 1998 the two artists organised a photographic journey together which took them from the United States to Italy and marked the beginning of their subsequent, steady working relationship. This then, is the background for the TWO SPIRITS exhibition: two free spirits, similar but different, geographically and generationally distant but close together in their way of perceiving the outside world and the subjects of their work. |
