Michael Kenna - Retrospective two

MICHAEL  KENNA
RETROSPECTIVE TWO
Verona, Scavi Scaligeri
29
th October 2005 - 8th January 2006

Michael Kenna, English born photographer, is known and appreciated by the general public and international critics of photography alike. He published over twenty books, his works have been shown in more than three hundred one-person exhibitions, and they are part of some ninety collections around the world. He won numerous international awards and in the Year 2000, the French Ministry for Culture named him Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters. Today he lives in Portland, Oregon in the United States.

“Michael Kenna is an artist who is able to relinquish speed to stay in tune with channels of peaceful and respectful cohabitation with the places he has visited and studied. Far away from the periods and timetables dictated by an automation that has led us all to move simultaneously and feverishly, Kenna shows us what we have never even had the time to notice. He looks at these places from unexpected physical and mental viewpoints, and he does so moving at certain times of the day, when the light is yet to emerge (…) From the half-light of the places in which he is physically present, Kenna starts out on a journey that will not come to an end after he has made his lengthy exposures, but which continues later into an equally dark place – the Darkroom – where under a faint red light bulb, the photographer becomes a printer to review and bring new light to everything he has seen, or perhaps just imagined*.”Mauro Fiorese, exhibition’s curator.
