In a rapidly urbanizing planet, where 6 out of 10 people live in cities, in 2011 the Biophilic Cities network was born to respond to the human need to connect to nature every day, making use of the significant amount of research that shows the impact of nature on our health and well-being, on the social, environmental and economic sphere. The goal of Biophilic Cities, including examples such as Singapore and San Francisco, is to reconnect people to nature in their urban environments on a daily basis. A Biophilic City is rich in nature, offering the possibility of living in urban environments integrated with it, placing it at the centre of its design and planning.
In addition, it acts to create abundant opportunities for people to know and have direct and indirect experiences with local nature.
Biophilic Cities protect, inhabit and celebrate the ecology of the place, increasing the sense of belonging, co-creation and social inclusion. In fact, a Biophilic City is not defined only by its percentage of green, but requires the active and dynamic participation of the people who live there.
